Syften review: strong keyword alerts, with gaps worth knowing

Our Syften review in one line: it is a precise, developer-friendly keyword alert service for Reddit and niche communities, but it costs at least $29.95 a month and asks you to think in keywords. If you would rather describe what you care about in a sentence, AyeWatch watches Reddit and social media that way from $9 a month, with a free preview.
What Syften is
Syften is a monitoring service that has run since 2019 from Krakow, Poland. You write filters, and it watches a long list of places for matches: Reddit posts and comments, Hacker News, Indie Hackers, Product Hunt, GitHub, the Stack Exchange sites, Lobste.rs, Dev.to, Slack communities, newsletters, podcasts, Bluesky, Mastodon and the public web. X and YouTube are available as paid add-ons.
What it does well
Breadth in developer and founder spaces. It watches Hacker News, Indie Hackers, Slack communities and Stack Exchange in one place. If your buyers hang out there, this matters more than any other feature.
Speed on Reddit. Syften aims for a delay of under a minute on Reddit matches, and says X mentions arrive within 15 minutes.
Delivery options. Alerts go out by email, Slack, RSS, API or webhook, and the top plan adds MCP so AI tools can query your matches.
Onboarding. After signup it drafts a starting set of filters from your company and competitors, and shows mentions from the past 60 days during the trial.
Where it falls short
Keyword thinking. Filters are precise when you know the exact words. A request like "people frustrated with their CRM" is hard to express as keywords, and broad terms let noise through. Syften's AI filtering helps here, but only from the Standard plan up.
Cost creep. Entry is $29.95 a month, Standard $49.95 and PRO $119.95. Add X at $40 and YouTube at $20 and a mid-tier setup can pass $100 a month.
No LinkedIn. Syften's FAQ states it does not monitor LinkedIn, which rules it out for many B2B teams.
Scorecard
| Area | Verdict |
|---|---|
| Community coverage | Excellent for developer and founder spaces |
| Ease of setup | Good, thanks to drafted filters |
| Noise control | Good on Standard and up |
| Price for small teams | High |
| Social networks | X and YouTube cost extra, no LinkedIn |
The alternative we would pick: AyeWatch
AyeWatch starts from a plain sentence. Choose a subreddit, a Reddit user, an X search, a LinkedIn company or a TikTok profile, then add a rule like "only threads asking for a recommendation". It reads posts for meaning and sends a short brief with links when one fits. You can also describe a whole topic and let it watch news, blogs, forums and social sources together.
Push and the feed are on every plan; email, Slack, Discord, webhooks and the API need a paid plan. Plans start at $9 a month, billed in monitoring credits, and it runs on web, iOS and Android. Read how it handles subreddit keyword monitoring or set up a monitor on AyeWatch.
Verdict
Syften earns its price if you live in Hacker News, Indie Hackers and Slack communities, or need an archive of past mentions. For Reddit and social alerts filtered by meaning at a lower starting price, AyeWatch is the better buy.
