A quick competitor SEO check in five short steps

One rival, five questions, one or two actions. Fits in a lunch break and costs nothing by hand.

A quick competitor SEO check is the short form of a full analysis. You look at one rival, answer five questions, and walk away with one or two things to do this month. It fits in a lunch break and needs no spreadsheet.

Here are the five steps.

1. Is this rival actually a search rival?

Type three searches your customers use into a private browser window. Does the rival show up on page one for at least two of them? If not, it may be a business rival, but it is not the one taking your search traffic. Pick the domain that does show up instead.

If you would rather see it in data, seogeoaeo.ai's Competitor Finder (38 credits) lists the 30 sites that share the most Google keywords with your domain and flags the close ones.

2. Which page wins for them?

Find the one page that brings the rival the most search visits. Note what kind of page it is. A free tool? A comparison? A long how-to guide?

That single observation often explains more than any metric. If their best page is a calculator and you have no calculator, you have found your gap.

seogeoaeo.ai's Competitor Keywords (35 credits) lists a rival's highest-traffic pages along with its top 100 keywords and the position for each.

3. Where are they beatable?

Look at the searches behind that page and the rival's position for each.

  • Second place: hard to move.
  • Ninth place: reachable with a better page.

Pick one search where they sit low on page one and you have nothing. That is your first target. Treat any volume or traffic number as an estimate, good for comparing but not for quoting.

4. Does their page beat yours on the basics?

Open their best page and your nearest one side by side and check:

  • One clear title and main heading
  • Fast load on your phone
  • Main text still visible with JavaScript off

If yours fails where theirs passes, fix that first. It is the cheapest win you will find. The On-Page SEO Checker (8 credits) and AI Crawler View (8 credits) answer the first and third questions for any public page.

5. Do AI answers cite them?

Ask ChatGPT the question your buyers ask, such as "best X for Y". Note whether the rival gets named or linked, and which page. If they are cited and you are not, read the cited page and see what it says in its first few lines.

For counts across many answers, the AI Citation Finder (160 credits) shows how many Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT answers cite a domain.

What you end up with

One or two actions, written down, with a date to check again. For example: "Build a comparison page for the search where the rival sits ninth" and "Fix our product page heading."

Three traps to skip

  • Picking the wrong rival. The company your boss mentions may not rank for anything you want. Check step 1 honestly.
  • Chasing a giant. Wikipedia and YouTube rank for almost everything. You cannot copy them, so leave them out.
  • Counting links. If you look at links at all, ask where a rival's strongest ones come from. Directories and partner pages are within reach; years of press coverage are not a lunch-break job.

What it costs

Done by hand, nothing. With seogeoaeo.ai, the keyword and technical lookups for one rival come to 51 credits, or 211 with the AI citation count. Plans start at $29 a month for 2,000 credits, and each tool shows its price before it runs.

When you need more than a quick check

A quick check covers one rival. A full analysis covers three to five and adds links. seogeoaeo.ai explains that version in its full guide to the process. It also does not track rankings day to day; for that you would add a rank tracker such as Semrush's Position Tracking.
