Claude Max price: what $100 a month buys, and what costs extra
Max is a monthly-only $100 plan with five times Pro's usage; usage credits, an API key in your shell and the $200 Ultra tier are where the real total moves.

The Claude Max price is $100 a month as of November 2026, billed monthly with no annual option. That buys five times the allowance of the $20 Pro plan; the $200 tier people still call Max 20x is now a separate plan named Ultra.
All figures here come from Anthropic's pricing page and the Max and Ultra help articles, checked on November 4, 2026.
The price, line by line
| Item | Max | For comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Plan price | $100 a month | Pro $20 ($17 a month billed yearly), Ultra $200 |
| Billing | Monthly only | Pro has an annual option; Ultra is monthly only |
| Tax | Not in the shown price | Some regions add it at checkout |
| Mobile app | Price may differ | Depends on the app store platform |
| Discounts | None standing | Promotions are occasional and time-limited |
| API credits included | $100 a month | Pro none, Ultra $200 |
The $100 headline is the web price. Anthropic notes that subscribing through the iOS or Android app can cost a different amount, and that Pro's price is shown in local currency where supported.
What the $100 pays for
Max includes everything in Pro, then raises the allowance fivefold, both the five-hour session limit and the weekly one. It adds Fable models for up to half of the weekly limit, and Anthropic lists priority access when Claude is busy and early access to new features among the plan's benefits. Claude Code is part of the plan and draws on the same allowance as chat.
What can push the bill above $100
Usage credits. When you run out, Max can keep going on usage credits at standard API rates. They are charged apart from the subscription, up to a monthly spend limit you set in Settings > Usage. A heavy week can add a real amount, so set the cap before you need it.
An API key in your shell. If ANTHROPIC_API_KEY is set, Claude Code signs in with that key and bills per token instead of drawing on the plan.
Fable past its share. Once Fable models have used half of the weekly limit, you either switch to another model or pay for more Fable through usage credits.
What can bring it down
Prorated upgrades. A move from Pro to Max takes effect right away, and unused Pro time is credited. Coming from an annual Pro plan, any leftover value larger than one Max payment is kept as account credit.
The API credits, if you build. The $100 a month in Claude Platform credits covers the Claude API, the Console Playground and the Agent SDK. It does not cover Claude Code or usage credits, and it expires each cycle, so it only offsets the price if you write your own apps on the API.
Max price vs Ultra price
Ultra doubles the cost to $200 and changes the shape of the limit: ten times Pro per week, and no five-hour limit for verified accounts. Moving up from Max is charged pro rata for the rest of the billing cycle. If the five-hour window is what stops you, Ultra is built for that. If it is the weekly total, Max may already be enough.
Is $100 the right number for you
The price only means something next to your own usage. A useful line to draw: if the usage credits you buy on top of Pro start creeping toward $80 a month, Max is the cheaper way through. If they stay small, Pro plus a capped credit budget costs less.
UsageAtlas makes that easy to check. It is a free, open-source desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux that follows Claude's five-hour and weekly windows, logs local Claude Code tokens and models, and puts an estimated API cost on them over time. Those dollar figures are estimates rather than a bill, but a few weeks of them show which side of $100 your work sits on.
If you only use Claude for a handful of big projects a year, skip both plans and pay per token through a Console account instead.
