The Claude 5 hour limit, explained in plain terms
The session window opens with your first message and refills in full five hours later. Who has it, what happens when it runs out, and how to see it coming.

The Claude 5 hour limit is a session allowance that opens with your first message and refills completely five hours later. It covers claude.ai, Claude Desktop and Claude Code as one budget, and it sits on top of a separate weekly limit that keeps counting in the background.
Here is how it works as of November 3, 2026, based on Anthropic's own explanation and the Claude Code docs.
When the clock starts
The window is not tied to the time of day. It begins when you send the first message of a session, and five hours after that the whole allowance comes back at once. If you use it up in two hours, you wait out the remaining three.
You can see where you are in Settings > Usage, under Current session: the share used so far and the time left before it refills.
Who has a five-hour window
- Pro: yes, alongside a weekly limit.
- Max: yes, with five times Pro's usage per window.
- Team seats: yes, per seat, with a weekly window as well.
- Ultra: no, once Anthropic has verified the account. Ultra accounts that are not verified yet get a temporary limit, which Anthropic removes automatically.
How quickly a window fills depends on the model, the effort level, long conversations, large files and tools like web search. Anthropic says longer agent tasks that run code or create files generally use more than a quick question.
What you see when it runs out
Claude Code prints a line like You've hit your session limit · resets 3:45pm and holds further requests until then. Switching models does not help, because the session limit covers every model. The exception is a separate Opus or Sonnet limit, which /model can step around by moving to another model family.
A few features soften the stop:
- Wrap-up: if the limit lands mid-response, Claude Code may finish the step it is on, shown as "Usage limit reached · wrapping up". Anthropic is still rolling this out.
- Auto-continue: recent versions of Claude Code can wait in the open session and resume the task after the reset. The Desktop app's session-limit card has a checkbox for the same thing.
- Usage credits: turn them on in Settings > Usage and work continues at standard API rates under a monthly cap.
It still counts toward the week
Every request uses session and weekly allowance at the same moment. Anthropic notes that a heavy burst can drain the weekly limit before the five-hour window even refills, so a string of maxed-out sessions can end your week early.
See it coming
Claude Code shows a warning as the window fills, with the reset time. If you would rather not find out mid-task, UsageAtlas is a free, open-source desktop app that shows the five-hour and weekly windows side by side with local reset times and alerts you at a level you set. It works on Windows, macOS and Linux and needs no account. If you only chat now and then, the Current session bar in Settings is plenty.
